Remember, It’s a Disposal…Not a Wood Chipper!

Having Issues With Your Disposal?

We always recommend that homeowners call Roger’s Plumbing for any repairs, major or minor. However, there are some things that can be done by homeowners to prevent having to call us all together. The best DIY tip that I can offer people, is in regards to an appliance that gets used on a daily basis; the garbage disposal.

The garbage disposal is meant to shred pieces of food into smaller pieces, allowing them to pass through the plumbing under the sink. This does not mean, however, that it is capable of shredding anything that goes into it. Some foods should never be thrown in the disposal at all, and are better left for the trashcan. Eggshells, potato skins, coffee grounds, celery, rice, and shrimp tails are all examples of garbage disposal no-no’s.

I also advise folks to use their disposal moderately and to always run plenty of water through it before, during, and after use. And finally, just like anything that works hard, the disposal can get a little stinky at times. Use citrus peels to freshen it. Grinding up the peels not only leaves the disposal smelling fresh, but it also helps to remove any gunk around the blades.
