Ahh, the legendary survivor of over-the-counter sprays and nuclear war, so it’s rumored. If you want to see fewer roaches – or none – get a dehumidifier. Roaches love moisture. You might have been startled to flick on the light and find a cockroach crawling around the faucet. They’ve been hunting for food and water. But while you might imagine that they’re crawling up through your bathtub drain, more than likely, they’ve snuck in from another part of the house.
Water Bugs
A lot of people mix up these bugs with cockroaches. Actually, water bugs are a type of cockroach that have many of the same habits, but they live in water. They are usually found outside in pools, ponds, etc., but occasionally make their way indoors through openings just like their cousin, the cockroach. Once in your home, tiny water bugs go for water sources. That is why they are most commonly found in the bathroom.Getting rid of cockroaches and water bugs requires ongoing vigilance and pest control because they could be getting in the home from just about anywhere.
Silverfish
Silvery gray and reveling in moisture, the aptly-named silverfish is one of the most common bugs you’ll discover in your bathroom. You can spot them right away thanks to their bristly tails, long antenna, and the floating motion of their movement. They live in areas with high humidity like the bathroom but are most commonly seen by people around drains.Silver fish roam all over the house in search of water, so treating with spot treatments is usually not an effective means of eliminating them. A plan to treat your whole house and every area of it is the best defense against silver fish.
Mold Mites
Continuous moisture in the bathroom can cause mold and milder to grow. And where there’s mold, mold mites may be an issue. These tiny bugs may be tan or white, and they feed on mold. They produce as quickly as cockroaches, and like roaches, mold mites are teeny tiny white to tan bugs that feed on mold. Like cockroaches, they reproduce quickly and, also like roaches, can produce allergens that can cause an allergic reaction in some people.To get rid of mold mites, get rid of the mold! Usually there is some sort of leak that is causing excess moisture, leading to mold, which in turn leads to mold mites. Once these pests are gone, you’ll need to continue to keep moisture under control to prevent their return.
Drain Flies
Drain flies are small, furry looking dark flies with long antenna. They are annoying, but not dangerous. They end up in your because, disgusting as it is to consider, drain fly larvae feed off gunk in the pipes. Once matured, they fly up out of the pipes. If you see tiny bugs in your bathroom, there is a good chance they are either drain flies or water bugs.To get rid of drain flies, remove their food source. Get rid of the remove the build-up in pipes and also fix any leaks. Drain flies are also found around compost, so these materials should be properly contained to avoid a future infestation.
House Centipedes
This is the only type of centipede that lives inside of homes, typically, this introverted pest likes to hang out in moist basements and other undisturbed areas. However, they’ll end up in bathrooms if that’s the only moist spot they can find. They enter homes through cracks and openings, but once they are inside they can lay eggs. Congrats. You now have an infestation.If you have water loving bugs, don’t blame your plumbing and, whatever you do, don’t shoot the messenger – your plumber!Sealing cracks around windows and doors as well as adding weather stripping can help keep centipedes and other bugs outside.
