6 Indoor Plumbing Checks To Perform This Spring

So recently, we posted up about prepping the plumbing OUTSIDE of your home for Spring. Even though the weather is still amazing, let’s have a look INSIDE and do some Spring maintenance.(As always, if you don’t feel comfortable tending to any of these items, call your local professional plumber … like Roger’s Plumbing!)

Test Toilet For Leaks

An easy way to do this is to drop some food coloring into the tank and wait an hour to see if the bowl water changes color. If it does, yikes! That means you’ve got a leak, and that can waste a lot of water, raising that water bill! Call a plumber to handle it. And speaking of handles, it’s also important to make sure the toilet is flushing properly. If you have to jiggle the handle to stop the toilet from misbehaving, it’s time to replace one or more of the parts inside the tank.

Prevent & Clear A Clogged Drain

Make sure all drains are equipped with a strainer to prevent clogs caused by hair & soap in the bathrooms, and grease and food particles in the kitchen pipes. In the case of a tub drain, pull or unscrew the stopper from the drain. Pull the hair out with a pair of hemostats. Then use a wet/dry vac to pull clogged materials from the tub drain. Put your hand over the overflow area and give it a few taps, doing the same to where the hose is pointed at the drain as you operate the vacuum. This dislodges any materials in there. If your drain is still clogged, call in a professional!

Remove Mineral Deposits From Your Showerheads

Central Texas water is chockful of mineral deposits, and those build up in your showerheads. You can use vinegar to open those clogs. Just fill a plastic bag with vinegar and secure it around the showerhead with rubber bands, leaving it to soak overnight. By your morning shower, your showerhead should be running clear and clean!

Inspect Your Dishwasher & Washing Machine Hoses

Bulges or leaks in hoses leading to and from these appliances indicate weakness. If the hoses haven’t been replaced in ten years, you’re asking for trouble. Besides, when is the last time you pulled out either of the machines and cleaned there?

Check For A Water Pipe Leak

Open up those cabinets and inspect the pipes for kitchen sinks and bathrooms. Any leaks happening under there? Replacing damaged pipes now avoids big repair and water clean-up bills later.

Drain Your Water Heater To Prevent Corrosion & Sediment Build Up

Check your water heater temperature gauge to make sure it does not exceed 120 degrees. This not only saves energy, but it also prevents scalding. Both tank and tankless water heaters should be drained by a few gallons to flush away corrosion-causing sediment build-up. This corrosion results in a lack of efficiency and shortens the life of your water heater. Most plumbing companies offer annual maintenance plans that include some TLC for your water heater.
